A Visionary, Healer, and Humanitarian
Educational Foundation
Dr. R. Gopalakrishnan began his remarkable medical journey at the prestigious Madras Medical College (MMC), Chennai, where he earned his MBBS. Driven by a passion for vision care, he went on to specialize in Ophthalmology, completing both his MS and DO from Madurai Medical College.
There, he trained under the legendary Dr. G. Venkataswamy—the visionary founder of Aravind Eye Care System, renowned for shaping some of India’s most exceptional eye care professionals. This formative experience laid the foundation for Dr. Gopalakrishnan’s lifelong mission to bring world-class eye care to the heart of Tamil Nadu.
Dedication to Eye Care
Dr. R. Gopalakrishnan served as Professor and Head of the Ophthalmology Department at Thanjavur Medical College, where he trained many future eye specialists. He also organized several eye camps, offering free check-ups and surgeries to people who couldn’t afford treatment.
In 1975, he started his private practice in Thanjavur, during a time when eye care was limited in rural and semi-urban areas. With dedication, skill, and compassion, he made quality eye care accessible to thousands and brought real change to the region.
Awards and Recognition
In 2010, Dr. R. Gopalakrishnan was honored with the prestigious “Best Doctor’s Award” by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), a testament to his lifelong commitment to medicine and service to the underserved—a proud and inspiring milestone for Tamil Nadu’s medical community.
